Richard O'Loughlin dreamed of being a pilot for as long as he can remember. While his friends were busy earning their drivers' licenses, O'Loughlin was earning his pilot's license. But after completing an aviation degree and a commercial pilot certification in the 1990s, he discovered there weren't many available pilot jobs at that time.

Instead, O'Loughlin turned his sights to aviation management jobs, and soon found work at Boston's Logan Airport. He started as an assistant but worked his way up through the management ranks over his more than 20 year career, ultimately serving as Logan's airport manager.

The Jackson Hole Airport Board is seeking candidates for the new Custodial Services Department. Year-round and seasonal positions available. Be a part of a cohesive team that is responsible for upholding the highest standards of cleanliness through the airport. The successful candidate will have previous custodial or janitorial experience and be able to show demonstrated success working as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.

Objective The study's objective was to assess a new personnel selection and assessment tool for aviation security screeners. A mobile app was modified to create a tool, and the question was whether it could predict professional screeners' on-job performance. Background A variety of professions (airport security, radiology, the military, etc.) rely on visual search performance-being able to detect targets. Given the importance of such professions, it is necessary to maximize performance, and one means to do so is to select individuals who excel at visual search. A critical question is whether it is possible to predict search competency within a professional search environment. Method Professional searchers from the USA Transportation Security Administration (TSA) completed a rapid assessment on a tablet-based X-ray simulator (XRAY Screener, derived from the mobile technology app Airport Scanner; Kedlin Company). The assessment contained 72 trials that were simulated X-ray images of bags. Participants searched for prohibited items and tapped on them with their finger. Results Performance on the assessment significantly related to on-job performance measures for the TSA officers such that those who were better XRAY Screener performers were both more accurate and faster at the actual airport checkpoint. Conclusion XRAY Screener successfully predicted on-job performance for professional aviation security officers. While questions remain about the underlying cognitive mechanisms, this quick assessment was found to significantly predict on-job success for a task that relies on visual search performance. Application It may be possible to quickly assess an individual's visual search competency, which could help organizations select new hires and assess their current workforce.

On the lookout for anything suspicious or out of the ordinary, TSA agents must be vigilant in the passenger screening process. Since security airport screeners have a wide variety of job duties, a TSA agent must be proficient in several areas. During a shift, a TSA screener will move from ticket scanning to baggage scanning or passenger screening. All TSA agents are constantly watching passengers to look for anything that may be concerning.

The TSA employs a total of about 11,700 screeners at the 10 airports. The turnover rate across those sites ranged from 30 percent to more than 80 percent over the five years analyzed. Turnover among federal employees overall has hovered around 15 percent during the past three years, Hausknecht said.

Perform Pat-Down Checks If an individual triggers the machine alarms, airport security screeners perform a pat-down check or use a hand-held wand to ensure they don't have any sharp objects on their person. If they find any potentially dangerous items, they confiscate these from the passenger.

Record Information About Suspicious Baggage If a personal item or carry-on bag triggers an alarm but no reason can be found after a manual check, airport security screeners record information about the baggage and the passenger for future reference and investigation if necessary.
